The countdown to Carthaginians and Romans 2026 has begun. Declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the event takes place in the second half of September (this year, from 18 to 27 September) and, yes, Cartagena really does travel back in time to relive the Second Punic War, which took place more than 2,000 years ago. If you think seeing troops and legions roaming the streets will impress you, just imagine how the little ones will feel.

And this really is a celebration for the whole family. Not only does the programme include activities for younger visitors, but every day features a spectacular historical re-enactment that is sure to leave children wide-eyed with amazement. Add to that the setting itself: a city whose streets are home to places such as the Roman Theatre, the Forum, castles, city walls and forts…

So, you may be wondering: what should you see during Carthaginians and Romans? The easy answer would be everything, but let’s manage expectations and be realistic: you’re travelling with children. We’d say they will particularly enjoy the landings, both the Carthaginian Armada and Roman landings; the battle for the conquest of the city; and, of course, the Victory Parade.

The Carthaginians and Romans 2026 programme is an event in itself for endlessly curious young minds. For 10 days, there will be no shortage of things to amaze them. And that is not all, because the organisers have also included activities specifically designed for children.

On Saturday 19 September, they can enjoy the theatrical performances Tras las Huellas de Cartago and El Pacto de Himilce. These will help them begin to understand the major events that will unfold over the following days. They will take place at 7.30 pm on the Esplanade of the Port of Cartagena.

They will also have their own parade on Thursday 24 September at 11 am. For an hour, the youngest members of the troops and legions, dressed in their costumes and carrying their respective weapons, will make their way through places such as Plaza de los Carros, Plaza de España and Calle Mayor. Afterwards, at around 12.30 pm, all attention will move to the Esplanade of the Port of Cartagena, where they will fight their own battle, followed by activities, challenges and children’s games.

In addition, every Saturday in September, at the Roman Theatre, children can meet Hannibal and Scipio, the key figures of the Second Punic War, and, for a while, become part of a troop or legion as they discover the most important events from this moment in history.

And if you do not want your September getaway to Cartagena to revolve entirely around the festival, there are other activities that will allow you to discover other sides of the city’s history. 1. Don’t rush or try to do everything at once

Choose one or two activities per day and enjoy the experience at a relaxed pace that suits the children. Remember, every day of the festival features a historical re-enactment or event worth seeing. The programme makes it easy to plan.

2. Key places to know

Although the whole of Cartagena gets into the festive spirit, there are two places where children are likely to have an especially good time. First, the festival camp (Carthaginians and Romans Esplanade), where the troops and legions set up camp, decorate their spaces, organise children’s activities and invite visitors to sample traditional food. Then there is the fairground area, located right next to the camp.

3. Go early in the day

Especially in the morning. You’ll avoid the heat, the crowds and excessive noise. In fact, if you are planning to attend the major shows, don’t forget ear defenders.

4. Leave the car behind

During the festivities, forget about using the car. You will need to get around on foot or by public transport. If you opt for public transport, the sightseeing bus can take you to the festival camp. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and, if you are travelling with a baby, you may find a baby carrier easier than a pushchair.
