Granada
Solo travel

Granada’s endless beauty and wealth of cultural experiences make it the perfect destination for solo travellers. It is particularly well suited to those venturing out on their own for the first time: there is always something to do, so boredom never gets a chance to set in, and the city’s friendly atmosphere makes it easy to meet new people. That is why we know you will end up wishing for just a little more time—or all the time in the world—to enjoy everything Granada has to offer.

The Alhambra: the ultimate must-see

No matter how many times you visit Granada, you will always want to return to the Alhambra. Even if you think you have already explored its Alcazaba fortress, admired the intricate details of the Nasrid Palaces and taken more than enough photos of the Generalife gardens. You can tell yourself all this, but deep down you will know you are kidding yourself. As soon as you arrive in the city and realise that this time you can explore at your own pace, lingering for as long as you like in each place, you will feel the need to experience it all again—at least one more time.

In Lorca’s footsteps

Whether because they formed part of his daily life, inspired his work or were chosen to commemorate him, there are many places throughout the city where the presence of the Granada-born poet can still be felt. You will come across many of them as you wander around, although there is one that should definitely be part of your visit: the Huerta de San Vicente.

This was his family’s summer home between 1926 and 1936, where he wrote, either in full or in part, works such as When Five Years Pass, Blood Wedding, Yerma and The Tamarit Divan. Today, it is a house museum and cultural venue dedicated to preserving his memory through a range of activities. If you would rather explore these places with other people, several companies also offer guided tours.

Sacromonte: flamenco is in your soul

Perched on a hillside in Granada is a neighbourhood where the houses are caves. Or perhaps the caves are houses. They can also be flamenco venues. When they are, they are known as zambras, and an unforgettable flamenco performance is guaranteed. Go on in, and do not feel self-conscious about going alone: the atmosphere is something you have to experience for yourself. It is also the kind of place where you will soon be raising a glass with the person next to you and making new travel companions.

Tapas you will never forget

Besides flamenco, Granada has mastered another art form: going out for tapas, with many bars offering a complimentary tapa with every drink. There are plenty of areas where you can embrace this local tradition, but the bars around the Cathedral do it particularly well. Once you have sampled bite-sized portions of Sacromonte omelette, olla de San Antón stew or tender broad beans, round off the experience by relaxing over a cup of tea in one of the city’s traditional tearooms.

The best sunset in the city

The Albaicín is the Granada neighbourhood that forms part of the site declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and picturesque corners that will have you stopping to take photos on your way up. Because yes, exploring this part of the city means climbing. Climbing all the way to the San Nicolás viewpoint, where you can enjoy the best sunset in Granada, with spectacular views of the Alhambra bathed in orange light. You will love the scenery, as well as watching groups of friends begin to gather—sometimes with guitars—to play impromptu music that anyone is welcome to join.

The rest you deserve

If there is one thing our three properties in the city—Sercotel Palacio de los Gamboa, Sercotel Granada Suites and Sercotel HMO Martina—have in common, it is their excellent central locations. They also offer comfortable facilities, thoughtful attention to detail and everything you need to feel at home whenever you return after a day spent exploring the city.
