On April 23, Catalonia celebrates its patron saint, Sant Jordi, in a day that blends tradition, literature and life in the streets.
The most well-known legend takes us to Montblanc, where a dragon terrorised the town until a knight defeated it. From the dragon’s blood, a red rose bloomed. And so began a tradition that is still very much alive today: giving books and roses.
Thankfully, times have changed. Today, everyone gives and receives: couples, friends, colleagues… any excuse is a good one to share stories.

During Sant Jordi, Barcelona transforms. Literally. The main arteries of the city centre become a continuous promenade of books, signings and roses.
If it’s your first time —or if you want to head straight to the heart of the celebration— take note of these must-see spots:
In 2026, the City Council once again reinforces the literary “superblock” in central Barcelona — a large pedestrianised area where bookshops, publishers and authors gather to sign books throughout April 23. More space, more comfort, and the same vibrant atmosphere as always.

Beyond strolling among books and roses, this year’s agenda is packed with plans for all tastes:
Author signings
Throughout the day, national and international writers will be signing books at major bookshops and stalls across the city centre.
Professional book and rose stalls
Spread throughout the city, especially along the central axis on April 23.
Cultural activities during Sant Jordi week
Bookshops, libraries and cultural centres organise storytelling sessions, workshops and presentations in the days leading up to and following April 23.
Gastronomic and cultural atmosphere
Restaurants and cafés join in with special offerings throughout the day.
Believe us when we say that, on this occasion, what you’ll appreciate most about Sercotel hotels in Barcelona is their location.
Whether you choose the Sercotel Caspe, the Sercotel Rosellón or the Sercotel Ámister Art Hotel, you’ll be just steps away from where everything happens: Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya.
Because on a day like this, the ideal plan is simple: head out without rushing, follow the flow… and come back whenever you feel like it. We’ll make sure your rest lives up to the day.
