Summer in Salamanca: refreshing plans to enjoy with friends

Ideal for

Salamanca
Summer getaway
city breaks
Weekend getaway

Don’t let inland summers put you off. Salamanca has sunshine, yes. And golden stone, terraces and long afternoons. But it also has plenty of plans to help you slow down when the heat kicks in and swap the pavement for some shade, an evening visit or a green escape.

This isn’t about skipping the must-sees. The Plaza Mayor, the University, the Casa de las Conchas and the cathedrals will still be there, waiting to be admired at your own pace. This is about having a few refreshing ideas for enjoying Salamanca with friends when the day calls for a little breather.

Enjoy an ice cream at Café Novelty

We don’t recommend Café Novelty just for the sake of it. We do it because it’s one of those places where Salamanca is best understood from a table. Founded in 1905 and located right in the Plaza Mayor, it is the oldest café in the city and a classic meeting place in its social, political and cultural life.

Writers, artists and notable figures have all passed through its doors. Miguel de Unamuno made Novelty one of his regular literary gathering spots, and Gonzalo Torrente Ballester even has a sculpture in his favourite corner of the café. Today, it remains a lovely place to pause, look out over the square at an unhurried pace and order an artisan ice cream or a milkshake. Because sometimes the best summer plan starts with a spoon and ends with half an afternoon of conversation.

Enjoy culture out in the streets

In summer, Salamanca doesn’t stay indoors. It spills out into squares, courtyards, gardens and neighbourhoods with the Salamanca Plazas y Patios programme, one of the city’s seasonal cultural highlights. In 2026, the programme brings together more than fifty activities in June, July and August, including theatre, music, jazz, poetry, concerts and family-friendly events in spaces such as the Plaza Mayor, Patio Chico, the Jardines de Santo Domingo, the Torre de los Anaya and several city parks.

This year, the common thread is the 5th Centenary of the School of Salamanca, so the plan comes with a double dose of summer and heritage. The beauty of this programme is that it leaves room for spontaneity: have an early dinner, wander over to a historic courtyard, listen to live music outdoors and walk back through a city that, at night, seems to lower its volume just enough.

Go up the cathedral towers at sunset

Salamanca is beautiful at any time of day, but when the light begins to fade and the stone starts to change colour, the city takes looking good very seriously. To see it from above, ask for Ieronimus, the visit to the cathedral towers.

The route lets you discover corridors, interior rooms, terraces and viewpoints within the cathedral complex. In 2026, in addition to daytime visits, there is a guided night-time programme on Fridays and Saturdays, with late afternoon and evening sessions. It’s a perfect plan for when the heat starts to ease and the city gradually switches on its lights. It’s worth checking the timetable and booking in advance, as sessions may vary depending on the calendar and availability.

Start the evening in the Barrio del Oeste

For a change of scene, head to the Barrio del Oeste. Here, urban art doesn’t hide away: it appears on garage doors, façades, street furniture and corners that might otherwise go unnoticed if someone hadn’t decided to turn them into a canvas.

The project is known as Galería Urbana and has transformed the neighbourhood into an open-air gallery that can be explored at any time. Go without too much of a plan, keep your eyes open and don’t be afraid to wander a little. After that, the neighbourhood itself and Salamanca’s city centre will take care of the rest: bars, terraces and that very Salamanca way of stretching out the evening without needing any grand plans.

Escape to the Sierra de Francia

If at some point you fancy leaving the city and breathing in something greener, the Sierra de Francia is one of the best escapes from Salamanca. La Alberca, Mogarraz, Miranda del Castañar, Sequeros, San Martín del Castañar and Villanueva del Conde all preserve traditional architecture that invites you to wander slowly, admire balconies, step into small shops and surrender to that village rhythm that feels so good in summer.

There are also trails, viewpoints, valleys and shaded areas where the heat feels different. That said, if your idea is to swim in rivers, pools or natural bathing spots, check the official information and local signs first. In natural settings, conditions can change, and it’s always worth making sure that bathing is permitted and safe.

Where to stay in Salamanca

There’s only one thing you can ask of Salamanca’s beauty: to have it close by. And that’s where our hotels in the city make things easy.

Sercotel Las Torres Salamanca is right on the Plaza Mayor, perfect for stepping outside and finding yourself face to face with the life of the city. Sercotel Puerta de la Catedral, meanwhile, is next to the cathedral and lets you experience Salamanca from one of its most special corners, with rooms that, in some cases, look out over its stone silhouettes.

Two very central ways to stay in Salamanca and enjoy it at your own pace: in the morning, as the city wakes up; in the afternoon, when it looks for shade; and at night, when everything seems to feel just that little bit closer.
