Summer getaway
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city of beaches where you’ll want to settle in and stay awhile. Perhaps it’s their crystal-clear waters, with colourful underwater worlds hidden beneath the surface; the sand where it’s easy to lose track of time; or the handy facilities and leisure options that are always worth knowing about. Here are our must-visit beaches and all the reasons to go:

La Laja, perfect for watching the sunrise

You’ll find this beach at the southern gateway to the city, stretching for 1,200 metres at the foot of the mountains and running parallel to the motorway. At first, the thought of lying on your towel while listening to the hum of traffic may not sound too appealing. That’s why we recommend getting up early and stepping onto its black sand before the sun rises, so you’ll have a front-row seat when it does. If you fancy a swim after the show, you’ll find its natural pools at the northern end of the beach.

Las Alcaravaneras, for sports enthusiasts

Located on the eastern side of the city, this beach has golden sand and calm waters. You could simply arrive, spread out your towel and alternate between sunbathing and swimming. However, Las Alcaravaneras is also a beach for those who want to spend some time playing on its volleyball courts or trying their hand at watersports (the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria is located at one end, while several businesses along the promenade offer a range of activities).

Las Canteras, beauty beneath the water and plenty to enjoy on shore

More than three kilometres of golden-brown sand and crystal-clear waters, a lively promenade and a west-facing location that makes it especially beautiful at sunset. Here, the real spectacle begins beneath the surface. The reason? La Barra, the reef that runs parallel to much of the beach and acts as a natural breakwater, keeping the waters calm and creating a fascinating, colourful haven for marine life. You can explore it by snorkelling or scuba diving. We don’t think you could ever tire of diving beneath the surface in search of beauty, but sooner or later you’ll want to recharge your batteries. Relax on the shore before enjoying a feast at one of the restaurants dotted along the promenade.

La Cícer, for surf lovers

The waters of Las Canteras are generally calm until you reach its southern end, an area known as La Cícer. With no reef here, the water is a little livelier – just enough to enjoy hours of surfing, especially if you’re a beginner. Experienced local surfers usually head even further south, beyond the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. This is where you’ll find El Lloret, which is within walking distance of Las Canteras. Its waves and rocky seabed make it a break recommended for experienced surfers. Ask the locals and let them tell you all about the wave.

Peace and quiet elsewhere on the island

We’re not saying you should leave Las Palmas if you don’t want to. We’re just pointing out that, if you prefer somewhere less crowded, there are a few other beaches where you can find the peace and quiet you’re looking for. Take Playa Montaña de Arena, for example, in the south. Sheltered by a mountain of sand, as its name suggests, the beach is reached via a short walk. It’s well worth the effort: at the end of the path, you’ll discover an unspoilt beach, crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere. On the west coast, Güigüi is one of those beaches nestled beneath towering cliffs. You can reach it after a roughly two-hour hike from Tasartico or by taking a boat from Mogán. A magnificent Atlantic Ocean will be waiting to welcome you.

Where to stay

We imagine you won’t want to stray too far from the sea and the sense of calm it brings. That’s why our hotels in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have everything they need to become your perfect island retreat. And no, we’re not exaggerating: from the rooftop pool at Sercotel Playa Canteras, you can watch the Atlantic gently rolling before you. From Sercotel Parque Las Palmas, you’ll also be able to see the sea, knowing that it’s only a 10-minute walk away. Have a good stretch, head downstairs for a delicious breakfast and set off to enjoy it.
