Nalda in Bloom: the pink spring of La Rioja

A lot is said about the vineyards of La Rioja, about how incredible they look when autumn arrives, but not as much is said about how the landscape turns white, pink, and red when spring comes and the plum trees start to bloom. Where they do talk about it is in Nalda, a town about 20 minutes by car from Logroño. So much so that they even organize the Plum Blossom Festival, which in 2026 will take place on March 29.

And, to be honest, it seems like a perfect plan to kick off Holy Week by slowing down. The slow travel they call it nowadays. Here, they practice it with a day of activities designed to connect with the land. The event will start at 11:00 AM, at Plaza de la Tela. The soundtrack will be folk music (the sound of dulzainas) and, of course, there will be plenty to eat.

Because here, they eat. And they eat very well. You won’t miss out on hearty and delicious shepherd’s crumbs, roast meat on vine branches (those small branches that grow from the vine and, once pruned and dried, can be used to roast meat), doughnuts, and honey, pâté, pickles, liquors, or the organic marmalade from the region.

And since travelers don’t live by food alone, at the Plum Blossom Festival, they also organize visits to the orchards to walk among the fruit trees and go up to the castle viewpoint to admire the colorful cloak that spring brings to Nalda.

Yes, Nalda has a castle. It also has a 17th-century chapel with generous dimensions, a ruined convent whose mere sight is surprising, and a medieval past to dive into. And we haven’t even told you about the surroundings and how nature was generous with this area, gifting it with dolmens, caves that may have been used as monasteries, an ice house eight meters deep, and even some waterfalls.

In short, you won’t finish exploring it in one day, and it’s highly likely that your body will ask you to discover it through hiking, taking a break along the way to lay out a charming picnic surrounded by greenery, and, while you’re at it, filling up the remaining space on your smartphone with the most beautiful photos you can take.

Wineries to tempt you in wine country

You might have come here to see the plum trees in bloom. You tell yourself that over and over again; but La Rioja and its wineries genuinely tempt you. How can you resist, even for just a few hours, when you’re in wine country?

We make it easy for you. In Nalda, you’ll find Palacios Vinos de Finca, which has two wineries in La Rioja Oriental: Bodegas Proelio, the first white wine winery in the area, and Nivarius. Both offer tours of their facilities, paired with tastings and gourmet appetizers. In fact, they take experiences to the next level, offering Land Rover excursions to some of their vineyards. And to top it off, they even propose a gourmet picnic or the option to enjoy a traditional Riojan meal.

Where to sleep

After that, it wouldn’t surprise us if you wanted to stay the night (or even move) in La Rioja. As coordinates, we can only recommend heading to Logroño, where we’re waiting for you at the four Sercotel hotels in the city. You’ll find us in the city center, right next to the famous Laurel Street, and we’re all set to welcome you: if you want, we’ll reserve a spot in our parking so you don’t have to worry about parking. And after that, tell us what you need: we can offer you a pillow menu, a pet-friendly kit if you’re traveling with your pet, tourist information at reception, and a buffet breakfast to start the day on the right note...
