Christmas in Vitoria-Gasteiz seems to seep into every corner of the city from late November to early January. Illuminated arches line the streets, charming figures appear here and there, trees are beautifully decorated and façades become canvases for dazzling displays of light and colour. And it all looks even more magical against the city’s medieval backdrop.

At this time of year, there is no shortage of things to do: open-air music, live Christmas carols, entertainment for the whole family, a children’s Christmas park and workshops for children… Some of the attractions most likely to delight younger visitors are the ice rink in Florida Park and the 30-metre slide traditionally installed in the area.

While you are in Florida Park, you simply cannot miss the Monumental Nativity Scene. It features more than 80 life-sized figures and over 100 decorative elements. As well as the Grotto, which serves as the stable, you will also find Herod and his castle, a village and the Three Kings.

Christmas markets are another festive highlight. We particularly like the Christmas Market. Located between Calle Independencia and Plaza de los Celedones de Oro, its most recent edition featured 35 stalls offering a mixture of locally made crafts and products from further afield.

The city has also added a tourist train to its Christmas programme. Its route passes through the Medieval Quarter and the Ensanche district, although it is advisable to check the dates and timetables for each year.

Although Vitoria-Gasteiz switches on its Christmas lights in late November, the festive season does not truly begin until the Night of the Candles. Held on the Friday before Christmas Eve, this is when the city’s medieval quarter looks more beautiful than ever, illuminated by thousands of candles. The spectacle is complemented by cultural activities for all ages.

The first is led by Olentzero and Mari Domingi on the afternoon of 24 December and marks the winter solstice. Olentzero is a charcoal burner, while Mari Domingi is a free-spirited, independent witch. They are friends whose mission is to deliver a gift or two and, above all, coal. This is not because the people of Vitoria-Gasteiz have misbehaved, but because the coal will keep their homes warm throughout the winter. They are joined on their route by giants and big-headed figures, woodcutters, shepherds and characters from Basque mythology… 

After the Olentzero and Mari Domingi parade comes the Three Kings parade. In Vitoria, it would be more accurate to speak of a whole day spent with Their Majesties the Three Kings. Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar arrive in the city by train in the morning. They then spend the day meeting the children and finding out what presents they have asked for before the parade sets off through the city’s streets on the afternoon of 5 January.

Vitoria may not be on the coast, but that does not mean fish cannot take centre stage. Popular choices include baked sea bream, hake cheeks and, of course, cod pil-pil. Fish soup is another firm favourite. If you are in the mood for seafood, txangurro is a must. Meat lovers will enjoy capon or roast lamb. Raise a glass with Rioja Alavesa wine and, for dessert, why not try intxaursaltsa? This traditional cream is made with walnuts, cream, sugar and cinnamon.
