Bilbao’s Semana Grande, known as Aste Nagusia, is much more than a festival: it’s the moment when the city changes its rhythm and fully embraces life in the streets. For nine days, Bilbao fills with music, local groups, theatre, sports and activities for everyone, blending tradition with a vibrant, modern energy.
The celebration begins with the opening speech at Teatro Arriaga and the appearance of Marijaia, the festival’s iconic symbol. From then on, the city becomes an open stage where txosnas, concerts and nightly fireworks take centre stage. Every corner has something to offer, from the Old Town to the riverside.
It’s a participatory, welcoming and lively celebration where both locals and visitors are part of the experience. Here, no one is just watching—everyone joins in.
