The fervour and grandeur of the Holy Week processions in southern Spain may be difficult to match. But that is not a problem. This is not about competing. It is about discovering. That is why, alongside the more traditional breaks at this time of year, we are adding another option that takes us north to San Sebastián and Bilbao, where you can also find events linked to this religious celebration, while still leaving plenty of time for leisure activities.

San Sebastián is not a city known for having many Holy Week processions, but that does not mean it is not a great destination at this time of year. Firstly, if you want to experience the religious side of these days, there are opportunities to do so. On Good Friday, for example, the place to head is Mount Urgull. Famous, among other things, for its spectacular surroundings, it is the setting for the Stations of the Cross. San Sebastián has also recently revived its Good Friday procession, which sets off from the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd and winds its way through the city centre. As the programme may vary from year to year, it is advisable to check the times and routes before your visit.

Secondly, we cannot think of a better base from which to explore Gipuzkoa and visit nearby towns where processions do take place during Holy Week. One event that may already be on your radar — and if not, let us tell you about it — is the solemn Holy Burial procession in Azkoitia. On Good Friday, as night falls, the town’s streets witness the passing of the Tomb of Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, accompanied by soldiers striking the ground with their spears. Nearby lies Segura, where the deeply felt observances of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, together with the involvement of local residents, are made even more special by the setting: the processions wind their way through narrow streets with a distinctly medieval feel.

What we like about Holy Week in Bilbao is that, unlike the solemn and sombre atmosphere that dominates proceedings in other cities, it leaves room for anyone looking for something different — even if only for a while — to find it. In short, there is something for everyone.

There is certainly no shortage of processions. Far from it. Between the Friday of Sorrows and Easter Sunday, numerous processions and a Stations of the Cross make their way through the city centre and various neighbourhoods across Bilbao. And what a sight they are. The appearance of the enormous religious floats often leaves spectators speechless, as a sense of solemnity fills the streets. Whether it is the Nazareno procession, where spectators sing traditional saetas; the early-morning Silence procession, during which all noise is forbidden; or the Borriquito procession, where Palm Sunday fronds take centre stage. When you arrive in Bilbao, we recommend visiting the Tourist Information Office to ask which streets and squares offer the best views of the processions you would like to see.
