With so much to see, there is no reason to keep taking the same trips. That is why we have selected five winter destinations in Spain that are often overlooked in favour of more popular getaways.

Lugo is home to the only Roman wall to have been declared a World Heritage Site. Just imagine the sight on a winter’s day, as the mist begins to settle and the lights come on. Two sites outside the city walls offer fascinating glimpses into its Roman past: the Roman baths —advance booking is required— and the bridge over the River Miño. Back within the walls, the historic centre has numerous pedestrianised streets and is best explored on foot, discovering places such as the cathedral, which brings together Baroque, Gothic and Romanesque elements in glorious harmony. Don’t miss Praza do Campo and the surrounding area, one of the best places for tapas and great food. Octopus, eels, smoked San Simón cheese, meat, fish…

It is impossible to talk about Burgos without mentioning its Gothic cathedral and the magnificent spires that crown it. You may be tempted to stay inside uncovering its secrets, but we recommend getting out and exploring the city. Head up to the highest point to find its castle. Afterwards, visit the Museum of Human Evolution. Here, you can see some of the fossils unearthed at the Atapuerca archaeological sites. It will be cold, yes, but the local cuisine will soon warm you up: roast suckling lamb, Burgos-style cod, olla podrida stew, Burgos black pudding... The Feast of San Lesmes, the city’s patron saint, is held on the Sunday in January closest to the 30th. Look out for the traditional handing out of bread rolls and enjoy the folklore and Gigantillos figures as they parade through the streets.

Where to stay in the province: Sercotel Ciudad de Miranda, in Miranda de Ebro.

Located half an hour from Pamplona, this town is known for its narrow streets and medieval character. Its heritage can be seen in landmarks such as the Palace of Los Mencos, the Church of Santa María and the Palace of Los Mariscales. It is also a great place to eat, with locally grown produce and meat taking centre stage. If your visit falls on 20 January, you’re in luck, as you’ll be able to experience the San Sebastián festivities. Although Tafalla is a destination in its own right, it is also the perfect base for exploring places such as Pamplona, Olite and its famous Royal Palace, as well as the region’s beautiful countryside. The lush, ever-green Baztán Valley is just an hour away.

Winter is the ideal time to explore Badajoz at a leisurely pace, without having to worry about the heat. And we love that. The city is just 6 kilometres from Portugal and stands on a hill on the banks of the River Guadiana —you’ll love crossing it as you stroll over the Palmas Bridge, with its thirty-two arches—. Founded by the Moors, the city’s defensive character can still be seen in landmarks such as its Alcazaba, the largest Islamic-era fortress of its kind in Europe. Its love of gathering and sharing, meanwhile, comes to life in its squares. You’ll notice it in Plaza de España, overlooked by the Town Hall and the Cathedral; in Plaza de la Soledad, with its Modernist buildings; and in Plaza Alta, whose beauty makes it more than worthy of a place on your Instagram feed. Ask the locals where to book a table to try a good tomato soup and fried tench.

What we love about Ciudad Real is that you can visit an archaeological site —Alarcos, around 8 kilometres from the city—, a Gothic church such as Santiago, which also boasts an outstanding Mudéjar coffered ceiling, and the Gran Casino, built in a classical style. We also love how the city surprises visitors with fascinating facts, such as the story of how Alfonso X the Wise ordered its foundation and even oversaw its planning. And yes, it has plenty of excellent food too. Highlights include game dishes —garlic rabbit, stewed partridge…—, as well as migas and gachas and, of course, don’t forget to ask about the local cheese. The Tablas de Daimiel National Park will add a touch of nature to your getaway. Located just over half an hour away by car, this wetland in La Mancha is always a wonderful place for a walk.
