No, a Valentine’s Day break isn’t just any getaway: it’s the most romantic break of the year. Or at least, that’s what we’re aiming for when we plan one. That’s why we’ve picked ten Spanish destinations, each with a perfect plan for two.

1. Seville: dinner by the Guadalquivir

We’re not sure whether it’s the light, the charm of its little streets or the scent of orange blossom that fills the air. What we do know is that Seville is a city for lovers. Your perfect break should include a stroll through María Luisa Park and dinner on Calle Betis, watching the Guadalquivir flow by.

2. Granada: a little intimacy at the foot of the Alhambra

In Granada , people come in search of the Alhambra and, let’s be honest, its Arab baths too. They’re especially appealing on a romantic break: the warm waters and massages will help you relax and reconnect with the present.

3. San Sebastián: a toast to good food

San Sebastián invites you to stroll hand in hand through the Old Town, head up Mount Igueldo for the best views of the city and explore the famous La Concha Beach. The perfect end to the day has to be dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Or better still, one with three stars, such as Arzak.

4. Oviedo: romance in city form

With its cobbled streets and beautiful architecture, romance comes naturally to Oviedo. The perfect plan might include exploring the city in search of its delicious moscovitas, spending an afternoon enjoying the arts at the Campoamor Theatre, then starting the evening on Calle Gascona over a few small glasses of cider.

5. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Valentine’s Day in short sleeves

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the endless spring and the chance to swim in the sea in winter sound like a lovely way to spend Valentine’s Day. Take a stroll along Las Canteras Beach, then go a little further to El Confital, a quiet spot away from the crowds. You’ll soon be ready for a picnic, with the waves and sunset as your witnesses.

6. Madrid: romance for city lovers

Madrid has plenty of places where you can escape the hustle and bustle. We’re especially fond of El Capricho Park, which opens on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It’s one of the city’s lesser-known spots, and one of its most romantic. After such a magical day, the only way to finish is to book a table at a rooftop bar and raise a glass to the view.

7. Salamanca: the city of La Celestina

It’s almost impossible to visit Salamanca without wanting to explore its cultural side. Book a guided tour (a night-time one, ideally) that takes in the Plaza Mayor, shows you the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea and lets you in on how to climb the towers of the Cathedral.

8. Girona: a medieval escape

You may have a picture in your mind of the Onyar River with its colourful houses, or the grand staircase leading up to the Cathedral. But what really steals our hearts is getting lost in the Jewish Quarter, one of the best-preserved in Europe. At certain times, you might not come across anyone at all.

9. Valencia: a boat for two, please

Valencia knows how to set a romantic scene, and one of the best ways to do it is with a visit to the Albufera, where you can book a boat ride for two at sunset. The views are guaranteed to impress.

10. Barcelona: the city at your feet

Barcelona is a city to explore from top to bottom. Admire the intricate details of Casa Batlló, wander through the streets of La Barceloneta and enjoy the sea air, then head up to the Carmel Bunkers. From there, the city will spread out before you in all its glory.
