Palma de Mallorca: sea, Gothic, sun and ensaimada

We can think of many ways to introduce you to the noble art of sightseeing in Palma de Mallorca: the problem will be choosing just one.

Although, as a sweet always goes down a treat, perhaps the best way to start the experience is by sitting down with a delicious ensaimada to make your intentions clear. Whether plain, with cream, cabello de ángel or any of the many variations that have appeared over the years, you will see life differently after eating this delicacy.

Then you have to get down to work and let yourself be carried away. You'll soon realise that Palma, with that omnipresent sun caressing the sky, is marvellous from any angle.

We suggest, however, that you start with its immense Cathedral of Santa María. You will see it there, haughty, by the sea, already clamouring from afar for the attention it deserves. A piece of advice? Don't resist, it will be in vain: you will fall in love from the very moment you pass through its gates.

You'll be dazzled by its mix of styles, each claiming its place in history. Not to mention its rose window, the largest in any Gothic church in the world. Or the chapel of the Santísimo, by Miquel Barceló himself.

Go out and take a look at another icon of Mallorca: the Royal Palace of the Almudaina, where the Royal Family stays when visiting the island, deserves its moment of glory.

After that, as in any self-respecting city, you will have to walk. Lose yourself in the old town. Notice the Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque details, the façades of the most stately houses and their half-hidden courtyards. Also discover its modernista side, reflected in the Can Casasayas twin buildings. In short: enjoy the visual feast. Because this is Palma de Mallorca, friends.

Experience the city like a Mallorcan

This makes it easy to enjoy all its many faces, such as the one you'll experience when you check out the Santa Catalina neighbourhood, full of bars and restaurants - and the occasional market - where the finest cuisine can be found. Or by taking a stroll around the marina: you would never have imagined such a spectacular display of luxury yachts and sailing boats as you will find here.
