Where to stay to make the most of the city of the Alhambra

Granada has something almost impossible about it: the Alhambra seems to float above the hill, neighbourhoods of narrow whitewashed streets climb towards the viewpoints, the river winds its way between façades from another era and, in the distance, majestic Sierra Nevada watches over it all. Heir to centuries of history, this magical place seems to change character around almost every corner: in just a few minutes, you can go from the bustle of Reyes Católicos to the silence of a carmen in the Albaicín. The best part? You can take it all in simply by stepping outside and going for a walk from our hotels in Granada.

The Alhambra: palaces, gardens and centuries of history

Some visits are worth an entire trip in themselves, and this is one of them. Set aside enough time to explore the Alhambra without rushing. You won’t want to miss a thing on a visit that includes the Nasrid Palaces, with the Court of the Lions and the Court of the Myrtles; the gardens and Palace of the Generalife, the Partal and the Palace of Charles V. Entry to the Nasrid Palaces is at an allocated time, so it’s best to plan your visit in advance. Afterwards, head back down towards the city through the unforgettable Alhambra Forest.

From Lorca to Sacromonte: ways to experience Granada

Culture lives in the streets of Granada. Federico García Lorca wrote some of his most important works here, at Huerta de San Vicente, his family’s summer residence, now converted into a house museum. His poetry is also sung, and you may hear it in Sacromonte alongside other timeless sounds such as zambras, a form of flamenco deeply rooted in the neighbourhood. As you wander through its beautiful little streets, you’ll understand why this city has inspired poets, musicians and artists for generations.

Eating in Granada, the city of tapas

In Granada, ordering a drink still comes with a reward in many bars: a tapa. Tradition calls for putting together lunch, or dinner, by stopping from one place to another along streets such as Navas or Elvira, as well as around the always lively Plaza Nueva. If you’re looking for something more substantial, however, seek out classics such as broad beans with ham, migas or remojón granadino. They never disappoint.

How to get to and around Granada

Granada is connected to a range of national and international destinations. You can reach the city via two airports: Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, around 45 minutes from the centre by bus, and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which connects with Granada in around an hour by transfer or bus. Another option is to take the AVE high-speed train or a long-distance service. By road, the A-44 and A-92 connect Granada with the Costa Tropical, Málaga and Seville. Once you arrive, explore the city on foot. For longer journeys, check the Granada Metro and urban bus networks. There are also specific minibus routes for reaching the Alhambra, Albaicín and Sacromonte.
