May is almost here: 5 getaways to switch off before summer

Ideal for

Cartagena
city breaks
Logroño
Lugo
May long weekend
Toledo
Zaragoza

A May getaway is that kind of break that already feels a little like summer — a chance to recharge before the main holiday season begins. That’s why we’re helping you choose the destination that best suits what you’re in the mood for.

1. Toledo

With Toledo, you know there’s always another building waiting to be discovered in its historic centre, and that it’s a city worth returning to time and again because it never stops finding new ways to surprise you. Here’s one name to remember: Fly Toledo. It’s the longest urban zip line in Europe and gives you the chance to soar over the River Tagus. The views? Incredible. Although, for truly spectacular views, head to the Mirador del Valle viewpoint. And if history is your thing, set aside a few hours for the shows at Puy du Fou. It sounds like a lot — because it is — but when you need to rest, our Sercotel Alfonso VI, Sercotel Toledo Renacimiento and Sercotel Toledo Imperial will be ready to welcome you.

2. Cartagena

Seeing the sea before summer arrives always makes a destination that little bit more appealing. And that’s certainly true of Cartagena, which combines its rich historical heritage with unforgettable beaches. You’ll fall in love with Cala Cortina, close to the city and blessed with crystal-clear waters that are perfect for your first dip in the Mediterranean. Back in the city, why not create your own food-and-history trail, alternating visits to landmarks such as the Roman Theatre with stops at bars and restaurants serving delicious local cuisine? And when it’s time to unwind, you’ll find everything you need at Sercotel Alfonso XIII Hotel and Sercotel Carlos III Hotel.

3. Logroño

On a getaway to Logroño, you know you’ll be raising a glass of wine. Your days will unfold among wineries, learning about the work that goes into every bottle. And when you fancy something different, a laid-back city awaits, where enjoying yourself comes naturally and there are plenty of places well worth your attention. You’ll love strolling along Calle Portales, discovering the Co-Cathedral of Santa María de La Redonda, stopping by San Blas Market and, of course, hopping from bar to bar along Calle Laurel. Very close by, you’ll find our Sercotel Portales, Sercotel Murrieta, Sercotel Calle Mayor and Sercotel Logroño Suites, all offering everything you could want from your accommodation.

4. Zaragoza

Zaragoza is best discovered by wandering through its streets and enjoyed by admiring its skyline from the Stone Bridge, with the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar taking centre stage. Take in the city from above by climbing one of the Basilica’s towers. Immerse yourself in its art with a visit to the Goya Museum, and switch off completely with a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Ebro. Treating yourself is very much part of the experience here too, especially when it comes to the fine art of tapas hopping around El Tubo. And yes, Zaragoza is also a place to relax. In fact, you can unwind in complete comfort at Sercotel Plaza Feria.

5. Lugo

Lugo welcomes visitors with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman walls as an impressive introduction. Climb to the top and walk along them for a glimpse of what awaits within: a city of charming narrow streets filled with remarkable buildings such as its Cathedral. Take our advice and ask about the guided tour called ‘A Walk Through the Clouds’. And remember, you’re in Galicia, where refuelling is a true gastronomic pleasure. Any of the taverns in the historic centre is sure to serve excellent food, but make sure you try carne ao caldeiro. When it’s time for a well-earned rest, we’ll be waiting for you at EsteOeste by Sercotel.
