There are cities that live off the sun, but Alicante has something different: here the light not only illuminates, but it also thrives. Its light also flourishes on its golden sandy beaches, on the ramparts of Santa Barbara Castle and on the terraces. To travel to Alicante is to let yourself be enveloped by that infinite clarity and discover that the city holds much more than simply good weather: it holds stories, flavours and corners that invite you to stay.

At the top of Mount Benacantil stands the Castle of Santa Bárbara, a stone watchtower that has been looking out over the horizon for centuries. You can climb up to its walls to enjoy the best panoramic view of the bay: the Mediterranean stretching out like a blue mirror, the Old Quarter at your feet and the city unfolding as if it were an open map. Going up walking or taking the lift? It is up to you; the reward is always the same: a view that will be engraved in your mind.
Alicante can also be heard. The old town vibrates with guitars, conversations on terraces and footsteps echoing through the streets. The neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and San Roque, with their white façades decorated with flowers, are the most picturesque postcard of the city: narrow streets, hidden viewpoints and an authenticity that makes you fall in love with the city. Have some tapas here, some local wine there... and suddenly you discover that you have been enjoying yourself for hours without minding the time.
The Postiguet beach is an urban luxury as you can go for a swim almost without leaving the town centre. Further on, the long beach of San Juan invites you to spend the entire day in the sun. And if you are looking for peace and quiet, Almadraba beach offers an intimate corner where the Mediterranean turns quieter.
It is also worth embarking to Tabarca Island, the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community. Its history of corsairs, its crystalline waters and its seafood cuisine make this small island a paradise available just by boat.
But Alicante does not live only on sand and salt water. The Archaeology Museum (MARQ)—awarded as European Museum of the Year in 2004, or the Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante (MACA), with works by Picasso and Miró, provide the cultural note. In addition, the Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre, a creative space where former tobacco warehouses have been transformed into a stage for exhibitions, concerts and activities that show the contemporary pulse of the city.
At the table, Alicante is the land of rice dishes. A banda, meloso, with seafood or vegetables: each recipe has a piece of sea and mountain on the plate. Wines with designation of origin and traditional sweets, such as nougat, complete a menu that tastes like pure Mediterranean.
