At the foot of the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park in the south-east of the province of Castellón, La Vall d’Uixó is a municipality with a rich heritage. So much so that by visiting it’s possible to go back in time to the 6th century BC. However, you’re likely to have heard of it because of its caves. They’re famous. A quick Google search will prove it. When you type in La Vall d’Uixó, the screen will be filled with images of its hypnotic Coves de Sant Josep. The perfect example of how, when she puts her mind to it, Mother Nature is capable of leaving us open-mouthed. Inside them, the water, constituting the longest navigable underground river in Europe, has flowed for thousands of years, patiently carving out nooks and crannies and watermarks in the rock and stalagmites and stalactites. A true visual spectacle that can be visited on a boat. Don’t worry, you’ll go with a guide, one who knows the terrain and what’s gone on there. In fact, there are clues that suggest that humans discovered these caves around 15,000 years ago. Although you might want to put off your plan to travel back in time until you visit the Poblado de Sant Josep. You can’t miss this settlement; it’s located on the top of a hill, a five-minute walk from the Coves de Sant Josep. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, this archaeological site was built in the Bronze Age and today you can appreciate the elements of Iberian urban planning. If you visit it, you’ll discover more than 40 metres of the wall, different streets, three square towers and other objects. Everything is watched over by the curious architecture of the Sagrada Familia shrine. You’ll fall in love with the views of the surrounding area from here, you’ll be fascinated by the golden shades of the interior of the place of worship and you’ll be surprised to find a Museum of Sacred Art. As we were saying, La Vall d’Uixó boasts plenty of heritage.

La Vall d’Uixó doesn’t have a beach, although it doesn’t need one if we take into account that, when you’re there, you only have to raise your head to be seduced by the greenness of the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. There won’t be any waves, but there’ll be a sea of trees and vegetation stretching out before you.
It’s furrowed by a network of paths; no matter which one you choose, it’s guaranteed to bring you back to our hotel in La Vall d’Uixó with your retina packed with spectacular landscapes and your smartphone’s memory full of picturesque fountains, viewpoints with amazing views, steep ravines and intricately-shaped trees whose branches twist around to create the feeling that you’re walking through a magical forest.
Located in the county of Plana Baixa, about 30 kilometres from Castellón and 50 kilometres from Valencia, La Vall d’Uixó will impress you with its churches, shrines, towers and narrow alleyways such as those to be found in the neighbourhood of L’Alcudia. Of Arabic origin, it’s one of the many and varied ingredients that this municipality has to offer.
Here you’ll find an imposing and delightful baroque bell tower in the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the beautiful and striking blue dome of the Church of Santo Ángel Custodio, the oldest in the town, and an aqueduct of Roman origin that was used to carry water from the Sant Josep Spring.
In La Vall d’Uixó there are also traces of its past as one of the most important footwear producers in the country. You’ll catch a glimpse of the above by strolling through the Segarra colony, a neighbourhood containing single-family homes that the Segarra Factory, the largest in Spain, built for its workers, and by visiting the Segarra Footwear Museum.
